ORSP: Florida Marlins

While the Marlins may have one of the most entertaining MLB Tweeters on their team (@LoMoMarlins), and a lot of youth, they don’t have a whole lot other than that going for them this season.  Unfortunately, they are going to have to play the Phillies a lot more than anybody outside of the NL East, which is going to put a major dent in their ability to capture the Wild Card.  Of course, they could be aided by the fact that they also play the Mets and Nationals.

Biggest Additions: Javier Vazquez, John Buck, Omar Infante, Edward Mujica, Ryan Webb, Randy Choate, Dustin Richardson

Biggest Subtractions: Dan Uggla, Cameron Maybin, Ronny Paulino, Jose Veras, Andrew Miller, Will Ohman

Offseason Review: The worst thing the Marlins did this offseason was trade their leader in home runs, slugging, OPS, runs scored and RBI’s.  That’s a lot of offense that now falls on the young shoulders of Logan Morrison and Mike Stanton.  I’m not saying that they won’t make up for Uggla’s missing offense.  I’m saying don’t expect it.  On the other hand, the Marlins did upgrade their bullpen, which could be important when they have those close, low scoring games against the Mets, Nationals and NL West teams.

Season Preview: I don’t think I’m saying anything controversial when I say that the Marlins are a solid team, but not a great team.  They will hang in with the Braves for 2nd place in the NL East, but that’s about it.  The highlight of this season for Marlins fans is going to be watching the development of their young players, who I expect to develop in a big way this year.

Final Record: 82-80, 3rd place in NL East
