Stop right there! If you haven’t read The Hunger Games or Catching Fire, and don’t want things to get spoiled, then bookmark this page and come back to it later… or just skip down to the last paragraph. I’m going to talk about some of the things that happen in Catching Fire, but I can’t do that without throwing in some spoilers about the first book of the series (which you can read about here).
Catching Fire is the second book of The Hunger Games Trilogy. It picks up right where its predecessor left off, with Katniss and Peeta returning home from their mutual victory in the 74th Annual Hunger Games. Unfortunately for Katniss, the Capitol is ticked off at her antics, and there are rumors of uprisings in other districts.
Right before the mandatory victory tour around the districts, Katniss receives a visit from President Snow who threatens her if she is unable to release some of the tensions building in the districts.
When it becomes time for the Hunger Games, we find out that it is a Quarter Quell – a particularly unpleasant form of the Games with a bit of a twist. The second Quarter Quell was won by Haymitch, Katniss and Peeta’s mentor, when each district had to send double the number of tributes. For the third Quarter Quell, by design from President Snow no doubt, it is decided that the tributes would be chosen from the pool of victors. Katniss, being the only female victor in District 12 history, knows right away that she is going back to the arena.
Much like the first book, Catching Fire is not going to win any major literature awards any time soon, but it is an easy, engaging, entertaining read. In fact, I read the last two-thirds of the book in one evening. If you liked the first book, then you will enjoy this one as well.
