If you accomplish something good with hard work, the labour passes quickly, but the good endures; if you do something shameful in pursuit of pleasure, the pleasure passes quickly, but the shame endures.
Musonius Rufus
When it is all said and done, when our time on earth is over, what will remain? What legacy will we leave behind? These are questions that we probably don’t ask ourselves very often; yet, these are some of the most important questions we can be asking.
While our physical bodies will not go on forever, we will leave something behind. What that something turns out to be is entirely dependent on how we live our lives right now. The decisions we make, the directions we go are what make up our legacy.
Musonius reminds us that the good will outlast the work it took to bring it about, but the shame will outlast the momentary pleasures we seek. So, are we living just for the moment or are we living out our legacy?
